What Is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?
The Eustachian Tube is a channel in the inner ear that helps regulate air pressure within the ear. It is the part of your ear that "pops" during a sudden change in the air pressure around you. It also helps drain mucus out of the middle ear, which helps to prevent infection.
For some people, the Eustachian tube does not always drain properly and can become blocked. This is a common cause for earaches for many children under the age of 7, but also for adults. Your doctor will be able to diagnose a Eustachian tube dysfunction, and in many cases the treatment consists of your doctor inserting a tiny plastic tube in the ear to perform the function of the Eustachian tube. Please call (408) 227-6300 to make an appointment with us if you are experiencing any pain in your ear, and upon examination our doctors will be able to determine if the Eustachian tube is the cause.
